In my review of
guitarist Bruce McKenzie’s previous release, DESTINATIONS, I
mentioned, among other things, his musical brilliance, his
lyricism, and how impressed I was with his art. Mr. McKenzie’s
fourth release, AFTER DARK, contains all of the above and then
some, showing expanded creative growth and even more depth of
artistry this time around, including some excellent solo bass
work (on “Cruisin”) in addition to his jazz guitar virtuosity.
Once again all strong and memorable original compositions, from
the beautiful ballad “Love Notes” to the chill grooves of
“Skyline” to the Reggae-esque “Caribbean Sunset.” Once again
Bruce plays all the instruments, and does so extremely well.
Once again I’m way impressed with his work. The passion, the
love for his craft… it’s all here in abundance. Bruce McKenzie’s
AFTER DARK is a must for your Smooth Jazz collection and is a
perfect soundtrack for before and after dark!
